She’s world class and at the start of her ninth year on tour. She’s a Californian with an Australian welcome especially in Torquay. She's a strong, confident, female surfer who knows what she wants and is determined to get after it. And of course, thrill through the process of taking it. She’s going for the 2020 World Title with razor-like focus. Give our Q & A with her a read.

Q: This year, what do you want from it?

Lakey: When you come really close to achieving something and you just fall short a few times in a row, for me, it’s adds more fuel to my motivation to win. I know what I need to do to get there. I’m pretty fired up to beat people and win. To be my best and achieve what I want which is to win a World Title. I’m not here to get second place. I’m fired up. It’s going to be fun.

Q: Waves on tour, any favs?

Lakey: JBay is my favorite wave on tour. I just love right points, I came from right points. It’s a very natural wave for me to surf. I find it just so incredibly fun.

I also love Bells but that might also be partly because I have a deeper affiliation with the wave seeing how my husband is from there and I’ve spent a lot of time in Torquay. I like the area and the place a lot. I do like Winky Pop more than Bells for sure but I just love the whole vibe of that event. I don’t know if I’d say that it’s my favorite wave but I love competing there.

Q: You’ve been on the tour for eight years circling the globe. You spend time between California and Australia…would you consider yourself a global surf citizen?

Lakey: You never forget home. When I paddle out at Rincon it’s my favorite thing in the world because it’s where I learned to surf. I love the wave and I love California. I’ll always remember where I grew up and where I came from.

Q: When did you know this life was for you, professional surfing?

Lakey: When I won National’s at 14 years old. That was definitely the moment I was like okay this is it, this is what I’m doing. I can do this. I’m good at it and I love it. That was also when I picked up my first few sponsors and it gave me even more confidence about my choice.
